Team USA / Olympic announcement

We interrupt this summer of off-topic posting and various nonsense to post real, actual Mathieu news.

Team USA has announced their list of invitees to the summer camp of potential players for the upcoming winter Olympics in Vancouver. Mathieu had hoped to play in these games, but he'll have to wait. In a move that isn't terribly surprising (at least to me), but probably disappointing to him, he was not on the list of those invited. (see the whole list at: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=432241

The potential team is very young with not much previous experience. The defense is particularly new to high level International play, with only Brian Rafalski previously playing the Olympics and Ron Hainsey, Jack Johnson, and Ryan Suter playing at the World Championship last month.

Later in the summer when I'm bored, I'll write up my thoughts on the Olympics, the NHL's involvement in them, and this potential team representing my country.

Je suis ici pour la poutine et bière

Woo hoo! The Unofficial Mathieu Schneider Home Page is hitting the road. Actually, more like hitting the air. Unless of course I wanted to drive/walk 2,963 miles.1

Yes indeed, I will be heading off to beautiful Montréal, Québec for the NHL draft and the first ever Draft Tweetup. It is my first time to la belle province, and I'm psyched! I'm told it is a great place, and I'm excited to meet some cool people, too.

I'm sure I'll have lots of stories and reports to share, and will do so when I have free time and WiFi.

---------------------
1For those keeping track at home, driving to Montreal would take 1 day, 19 hours non-stop. Or 40 days, 17 hours non-stop if walking. At least according to Google Maps.

The slow summer begins...

With the season officially open, not much to do until the draft and opening of free agency. Montreal has said that Mathieu was still of interest to them. I haven't heard anything else. Bummer.

So instead of real news, here is a picture of Vincent Lecavalier and some Middle Eastern ruins.

Some perspective of age

Unless you were living under a rock, you know by now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have won the 2009 Stanley Cup. What a resilient team they proved to be. Not only do they come back from years of fruitlessness, they overcome bankruptcy. And this season alone, they were out of the playoff picture for most of the season. And they came back from losing the first 2 games of the series...

Anyway, congrats to them.

Here is a funny thing that occurred to me after hearing lots of news about both the upcoming draft and the Penguins young captain Sidney Crosby (the youngest captain to win a championship).

Mathieu Schneider was drafted in 1987.
Sidney Crosby was born in 1987.

The draft that year was in June (the 13th I believe; but certainly some day in June)
Sidney was born August 7. (8-7-87... #87... huh huh)

Mathieu Schneider was drafted before Sidney Crosby was even born.

Whoa....

Happy 40th Birthday Mathieu!

Yup, today is the big day. The big 4-0.

I had planned to do a big birthday extravaganza, but my mind has been elsewhere lately and I just ran out of time. But for many years, I had done cool birthday specials, so I invite you to look back at those. I worked hard on them, so they might as well get a second life: http://www.geocities.com/schtimpy27/june12.html

There was one, though, that I thought I could update and re-present. It was the one I did for his 32nd birthday comparing the cost of common items in the year of his birth and "today" (which was June 12, 2001). It was cool to see how much has changed in the 8 years since.

*$2.62 is the nation average, but the Chevron station down the street from me this morning showed $3.01 for regular.

As I pointed out in the first edition, prices obviously can not be directly compared between past and present because of inflation and all that other economic mumbo jumbo. Also, some of the language of the original was a little odd and I wasn't sure how to replicate it. Like "chicken per pound." Is that a whole chicken, chicken breast, chicken drumsticks? (I went with whole chicken this time) And "coffee per pound." Was that ground or bean? (I assumed ground this time, and that made a difference of almost $10!) And "cheese." Um... what kind of cheese? The processed stuff, or gouda? (I used the price for "Sonoma Jack 8 oz wedge from Lunardi's; I have no idea what kind of cheese that is)

Anyway, the prices were taken from the daily mailers I had sitting around (from Target, Safeway, Lunardi's, and Rite Aid). Not sure how reflective the prices are of reality everywhere, but hey, it was fun...
